Ferguson Plarre Bakehouse

Love sweet treats? Time to own the oven.

About the Franchise

Ferguson Plarre is a family-owned & operated bakery café/franchise chain primarily in Victoria; it has ~80-90+ stores now. Most of the stores are franchised.

Products are all baked centrally in the bakehouse; franchisees do not perform on-site baking. The bakehouse delivers finished products daily.

Franchise model highlights: no royalties or marketing fees for franchisees; full support from head office; focus on quality, brand recognition, sustainable / ethical sourcing (e.g. free-range chicken, hormone-free beef, use of real cream, real custard).

Franchise-owner involvement: full-time store owners; need to be present in the business. There is flexibility to open more stores later with store managers.

How the Franchise Started?

The bakehouse business traces its origins back to two separate families: the Fergusons (starting around 1901) and the Plarres (from about 1911), each running their own bakery/confectionery businesses in Melbourne suburbs.

Otto Plarre migrated to Australia and opened Plarre’s Cakes in Moonee Ponds in 1911. The Fergusons also built up their bakery business in parallel.

In 1980, the two businesses merged to become Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses. Over time, the Plarre family bought out the Ferguson interests (in 2012) but retained the joint name.
