OWN A SLICE OF AMERICA: Carl’s Jr. Launches New Franchise Opportunities Across Australia

Iconic American burger chain, is intensifying its growth strategy in Australia following a recent update to its master franchise agreement. The brand is now actively seeking new franchise partners to help drive a new wave of expansion across the country.

Carl’s Jr. first entered the Australian market in 2016, opening its first store in Bateau Bay, NSW, under a master franchise agreement with CJ’s QSR Group Australia. Although the brand established more than 30 restaurants across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, growth stalled due to operational and structural challenges with the original partner.

Since then, Carl’s Jr.’s parent company, CKE Restaurants, has restructured its approach. With the conclusion of the master franchise agreement, the company is now focusing on a multi-franchise model, allowing regional developers and individual franchisees to participate in its next phase of growth.

“Australia is a high-potential market for Carl’s Jr., especially given the local appetite for premium burgers and drive-thru convenience,” said Mike Woida, President of International at CKE Restaurants. “We’re looking for qualified and passionate franchisees who want to bring a world-class QSR brand to their communities.”

Carl’s Jr. plans to expand into high-traffic metropolitan areas and key regional markets, targeting real estate with strong drive-thru accessibility—a format that has proven successful globally. The brand is known for its chargrilled Angus burgers, hand-breaded chicken, and bold marketing, and it aims to distinguish itself from local competitors like Hungry Jack’s and Grill’d by offering a unique U.S.-style experience.

While the brand is no longer operating under a master licensee, existing Australian stores remain open and continue to operate as franchisees of CKE Restaurants.
