How the Franchise Started?

In 2006, Steven Marks, a former hedge fund manager from New York, found himself in Australia yearning for authentic Mexican food, which was surprisingly hard to find.

Instead of settling for subpar options, he partnered with his friend Robert Hazan to create Guzman y Gomez, named after two Mexican friends from New York. Their goal was simple: to offer genuine Mexican tastes through premium fast food.

They hired talented Mexican chefs and sourced traditional ingredients, leading to the opening of their first location, affectionately called “The Baby,” in Newtown, Sydney, in October 2006. This opening signified the start of a burrito revolution, evolving a single site into a successful global brand.
